A Lent Recap

Lent began with Ash Wednesday. We changed our tradition and did not do ashes on Tuesday evening but instead waited until actual Ash Wednesday at a 5:30 pm worship service attended by about 20 people. We were pleased to have Rev. Duane Carlisle, the lead pastor at First UMC West Lafayette, preach and construct a powerful interactive visual display. Due to COVID we decided to keep our social distance – Pastor Glen went first to talk through how to mix the olive oil and fresh ash and place the sign of the cross on their own forehead or back of hand.

The visual display included signs, barbed wire, a door, and a mirror that was used for self-imposition of ashes. As each participant imposed ashes, Pastor Glen stood ten feet away and said the traditional words, calling each participant by name and saying “From Dust you came and to dust you shall return, repent and believe the Gospel.”

Our Sunday and Tuesday worship themes have been in the realm of reflection and repentance. Many have talked about facing our fears and growing in faith on the journey of life with God. We continue to have good numbers for these worship services.
